Panic Disorder

Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder characterized by unexpected, recurring panic attacks and a persistent fear of future episodes.

Common signs:

  • Sudden, intense surges of overwhelming fear or a sense of "impending doom"

  • Physical symptoms like heart palpitations, chest pain, or shortness of breath

  • Trembling, sweating, or feeling detached from reality (depersonalization)

  • Significant lifestyle changes to avoid places where previous attacks occurred

  • Constant worry about the health implications of the attacks (e.g., fear of a heart attack)

Panic disorder is treatable with evidence-based therapies, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and, when appropriate, medication.
